Update DKIM and DMARC Records in your DNS Provider

How to Update CNAME & TXT Records with Your DNS Host

At Floify, we strive to make the integration process as smooth as possible. To ensure your custom domain functions correctly with Floify, you'll need to update your CNAME and TXT records in your DNS host's management center. This guide provides general instructions on how to update those CNAME and TXT records, applicable to most DNS hosts. You can use the resource here for many domain provider's specific instructions for DKIM - Where do I go in my domain to configure my DKIM & DMARC records?

Step-by-Step Guide to Update CNAME Records

  1. Log in to Your DNS Host Account:

    • Open your web browser and go to your DNS host's website.
    • Click on the "Sign In" button and enter your account credentials.
  2. Access Your Domain Settings:

    • Once logged in, navigate to the section where your domains are listed. This might be labeled as "Domains," "My Domains," or something similar. If you don't see it on the navigation bar, it can sometimes be nested under "Settings".
    • Select the domain you want to update.
  3. Navigate to DNS Management:

    • Find the option to manage DNS settings for the selected domain. This is often found under a section like "DNS Management," "DNS Settings," or "Manage DNS."
  4. Add a New CNAME Record:

    • Look for an option to add a new DNS record. This might be a button labeled "Add," "Create," or "New Record."
    • Select "CNAME" as the record type.
  5. Enter the CNAME Details:

    • Name: Enter the subdomain you want to use. For example, if you are setting up a subdomain like subdomain.yourdomain.com, enter "subdomain" - it will typically look something like "em1234". For most modern DNS providers you don't need to include your domain, it automatically appends that for you.
    • Value: Enter the CNAME record provided by Floify. This is typically a URL that Floify has given you to point to our servers.
    • TTL: Set the TTL (Time To Live) to the default value or any value you prefer.
      • Note - If your DNS records are stable and unlikely to change often, a longer TTL can reduce the load on DNS servers and speed up DNS resolution for users.
  6. Save the Record:

    • After entering the CNAME details, save your changes. The option to save might be labeled as "Save," "Add Record," or "Submit."
    • Do this for all CNAME records given.
  7. Add a new TXT Record:
    1. Add a new record
    2. Select "TXT as the record type
    3. TXT name will look like "_dmarc". Copy this from the records Floify sent you. For most modern DNS providers you don't need to include your domain, it automatically appends that for you. For example, if the name Floify sent you looks like _dmarc.exampleinc.com, you only need to enter "_dmarc".
    4. TXT value - copy this exactly as Floify sent over. It will look like "v=DMARC1; p=none;". It may also contain a "rua=mailto...".
    5. Save, Add Record, or Submit
  8. Verify the Updates:

    • DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate fully. Please let Floify support know when the records have been updated to verify.

Additional Tips:

  • Consult Your DNS Host's Support Documentation: Each DNS host may have slightly different steps or terminology. Check their support documentation for specific instructions. You can find many DKIM configurations here - Where do I go in my domain to configure my DKIM & DMARC records?
  • Double-Check Your Entries: Ensure that you have entered the correct values for the Name and Value fields to avoid any configuration issues.
  • Contact Support: If you encounter any issues or need further assistance, contact your DNS host's support team for help.

Potential Issues:

  1. DNS Conflict: If you try to create multiple CNAME records with the same selector (s1 & s2 for example) under the same domain, the DNS will not know which record to return. This can cause DNS resolution failures or unpredictable behavior. If records have been set up previously, it's possible a selector may already be in use. In that case Floify can set up a custom DKIM selector.

  2. Verification Failure: The receiving email server may fail to verify the DKIM signature if the selector points to multiple keys or the wrong key due to a conflict.

Best Practices:

  • Unique Selectors: Ensure that each selector is unique to its corresponding key and DNS record. For example, s1._domainkey.example.com should point to only one DKIM public key.

  • Separate Records: If you need multiple DKIM records (e.g., for different services or key rotation), use separate selectors (e.g., s1, s2) and make sure each one points to the correct key.

By following these steps, you'll be able to update your CNAME records with your DNS host, ensuring your custom domain works seamlessly with Floify. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team at Floify.
